This morning I was reading through the first edition of "The Apostolic Faith" (1906), which is the main publication of Azusa Street church of pst. William J. Reflection on Augustine's Confessions
Augustine is one of the best theologians that the Church has ever had. He had a tremendous gift for writing and a keen mind. Confessions was written a few years after he was appointed bishop of Hippo in 398 AD. Rhetorically it is a beautiful book, which is not a surprise because Augustine himself was a professor of rhetoric. However, when we read this book, from the very first page we immediately get a somewhat negative impression of Augustine. Why was he able to vividly declare all the terrible sins he had committed?
