Nobel and Women
Yesterday, the 100th Chemistry Nobel Prize was awarded to two men and a woman, Ada Yonath, for their work on the chemical structure of ribosomes. Yonath is only the fourth woman who received the Chemistry Prize. The other women are Marie Curie (1911), Irene Joliot-Curie (1935) and Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1964). Cracking knuckles
Yesterday, the 2009 IG Nobel prize wnners were presented. The Chemistry prize went to Javier Morales, Luis Miguel Apátiga, and Víctor Manuel Castaño for their 2008 study: ‘ Growing diamonds from tequilla‘.  Unfortunately, their diamonds are relatively small. Donald L. Unger was presented with the Medicine Prize for investigating a possible cause of arthritis of the fingers, by diligently cracking the knuckles of his left hand — but never cracking the knuckles of his right hand — every day for more than 50 years (!).  His 1998 research

Plaatje Pentaceen
Het zal u niet ontgaan zijn dat onderzoekers van IBM Zurich een molecuul pentaceen met atomaire resolutie in beeld hebben gebracht.  Hiervoor hebben de onderzoekers Atomic Force Microscopy gebruikt, een techniek waarmee met een dunne metalen naald een oppervlak wordt afgetast. Het levert mooie plaatjes op.
