THE NOVEL THAT ALMOST WASN’T
GUMBO JUSTICE almost did not see publication at all.I had an original draft that I thought was pretty good. In my opinion, it wasexciting, full of interesting dialogue, twists and turns, and packed a punch with asurprise ending. What I didn’t see was that it was very long. At the time, I had noidea how long a novel should be, so using the novels of several prominent authors, Idid a rough word count, based on the number of words on a page and multiplied thatnumber by the number of pages in the books. I found them to be between140,000-170,000 words, and modeled my novel accordingly. I didn’t realize prominentauthors can write as many words a
