Reason, as I define it, is the logical use of acquired knowledge pertaining to the external world, underpinned by a hint of healthy scepticism, with a touch of objectivity and cooked slowly on the flames from the Enlightenment.
I am a columnist for Secular Humanist Bulletin, the newsletter for the Council for Secular Humanism. I am a contributor to Skeptic magazine and Butterfliesandwheels.com. I obtained a degree in Social Science and am currently focused on further study in philosophy.
I am an ex-Muslim anti-theist. I believe religion has no place in our society and that no ideas are beyond criticism. All ideas must be amenable to change, including those stemming from humanistic thoughts. Islamists have formulated a death-cult, making their members, including children, into the new weapons of today. I am against all religions but I am particularly focused on Islam, given my many years as an Islamic scholar.
We must be against the dogmatic Muslims, Christians and other faithful with their bullying, especially when they threaten our civil and human rights and values. The ability to think and speak freely is central to our lives, yet Muslim countries and Islamists would have us muzzled by their god.
As Andre Comte-Sponville said: “Freedom of thought is the only good more important than peace; for without it, peace would be another word for servility.”
This is worth defending and why we need to defend it so vehemently. |

Joost van der Westhuizen, a former Springbok scrumhalf, has admitted to being the man caught on tape, having sex with a woman who was not his wife and doing drugs. He said that he lied because he was “scared and confused”. Van der Westhuizen has been fired as a commentator on sporting-channel SuperSport because of [...]
Why Do We Fight Invisible Monsters?
In the midst of all these debates about god, Jesus, ghosts, psychic powers and other things that sound like something from a bad Superman comic, we tend to forget an important point: why we do it. Specifically, this is a question addressed to those who do not believe in god or ghosts (or think that [...]
Killing Babies
Like many controversial views, ‘anti-natalism’—the choice not to have children for moral reasons—is covered in the phlegm of misconception. And those filled with the most viscous fluid are those who believe that breeding is a good thing; or at least important toward leading a fulfilled life. This view is not just wrong, it is arrogant. [...]
Women and the death of equality
The most important focus of our times is not the death of monotheisms, the acquisition of utopian states, nor the drive toward wealth. The battle we have on our hands is already coagulated from the vast proportion of those we’ve allowed to die or disappear, from the toils of our past, in the crusade against [...]
