Description: My life was like a cheap dime store novel I used to say. But there is nothing cheap about graduating Highest Honors from UC Berkeley as a single mother, on state assistance. There is nothing cheap about being surviving a life in the Depressed Mode 80’s, being another teen pregnancy, even with a fancy college degree my real education came from living in “the hood” or off Fruitvale Ave in Oakland, California. My angst and pain becomes condition and then art. In survivor mode Ive achieved great things. Ive been given great awards and distinctions such as UC Alumni Scholar and elected to Prytanean, Women Leaders of Cal. I am a published writer and tormented soul. I just finished a book of poetry I have been working on entitled "In Sink". I put the GRRR into grrrl. I also have a non fiction book about marijuana magic that I’ve been writing and researching for over 10 years. I believe in a healthy balance between insanity and brilliance. I try to learn from each day, each experience and encounter. I’ve been doing freelance writing for legal sites and other independent contractor jobs. Im a published writer in High Times magazine, the Sun and writing a successful and controversial blog "Vadergrrrls Rant Page". Ive supported myself and my son off paralegal work, public library work, and whatever 9 to 5 pays the bills. I raised my Shaka Zulu, who loved his momma, but needed his dad in his life. So my blessing and greatest accomplishment left the nest to live with his father at age 14. I have the most amazing son, Demetrius Burns, who is 18 years old and taking the world by storm. He rebels against me by being conservative. That works. After him being raised in the UC Albany Village a product of Berkeley Women Studies culture, hanging in the Gilman Punx scene and going to medical marijuana rallies. In my life I have had some amazing opportunities and adventures. Ive networked, worked with and learned from some of the most amazing and incredible individuals. Ive been very fortunate. I worked my butt off as a navy wife in San Diego while Demetrius was a baby to get paralegal certification and my A.A. After achieving highest honors I decided to strive for more…. I went on to UC Berkeley where I began working at the Women’s Resource Center Student Parent Project with Alice Jordan. There with funding from Prytanean we created Finals Child Care for Student Parents. I also was able to study with June Jordan in her Poetry for the People class. It was also at Berkeley where I started smoking cannabis for medicinal reasons. Cannabis definitely helped me graduate with the GPA and be a better parent. After graduation like most Cal grads I moved to Fruitvale in Oakland. Hence began more adventures into world of Alice in Wounderland. I was able to work as the personal assistant to Ed Rosental, one of the worlds most renowed cultivation experts. Being a long time sufferer of migraine headaches, I soon became a patient of the former Oakland Buyers Coooperative. I recall Green Day’s song “Welcome 2 Paradise” playing the first time I walked into the cooperative as I was glancing at the clone room. Since then Ive had the opportunity to work with other clubs including Berkeley Patients Group, CHAMP and the blessed Bud Fairy Jane Weirick’s. I had the great honor of working closely with Jim McClelland RIP, who coined Oaksterdam. The best grower in the world. The man behind the Oakland CBC and Berkeley BPG. I also had the great honor of working in the National NORML office in DC with Allen St. Pierre and Keith Stroup two incredible pioneers and reformers. Through this opportunity I was given the opportunity to go to Amsterdam with High Times and coordinate the Goddess Cup in Amsterdam. Prince of Pot and hero Marc Emery generously gave me my own internet show on Pot TV "The Rebel Alliance" which I hosted for a bit until Bush became president and the Patriot Act stopped all my activism. I love tremendously the people in my life. I have a hard time keeping in touch with those that I love. This is mainly due to the fact that I like to isolate and sleep. This has been especially hard with Fibromyalgia and severe and debilitating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. For the last few years I’ve been a prisoner to my bed, unable to work, answer the phone, or do much of anything but sleep. I would sleep 16 to sometimes 20 hours a day. Then there is a lot of shame and depression, a viscous cycle, when you cant get out of bed due to the disability and the subsequent feelings of failure. A recent cardiograph revealed a hole in my heart. Birth defect. So I will be going under the knife here soon.
